Publisher’s Letter

Today, I want to write about my favorite topic: how we think. The subject fascinates me. Once upon a time I just...thought. I never really examined how I thought. How I spoke or communicated. How I carried myself or the message of my body language. After many years, a light broke through and showed me that the quality of my life is in direct proportion to the quality of my thinking. (Yes, this is one of my staple quotes.) Before that, I was blind to how my thinking was shaping so many parts of living and the direction I was traveling. I wasn’t aware about how my thinking was affecting my relationships, business, fatherhood, friendships and contentment, not to mention happiness.

I never considered that thinking positive is a decision. Making that decision is the first step to change but the change comes only with dedication, commitment and focus. Changing a life long negative characteristic sounds impossible but I promise you it is not. Taking action to change something in your life that is not working for you is all about yourself. Only you can take the action to reach your goal.

Changing from negative to positive takes all of you—your attention to details, listening to yourself, even taping yourself. Awareness is everything. We may not have to change it all but as you begin to improve and become a more positive person you will find all sorts of rewards—to your soul, your self-esteem, your mental health. If trying to understand ourself is rewarding; fixing and changing oneself is the gold medal.

Rather than thinking about what is wrong, the positive mindset thinks how changing a behavior will be so worth it. The mental adjustment to deal with life’s circumstances is like a political spin but with actual substance. And it makes so much common sense.

Positive thinking is loaded with gems of mental health.  People want to be with positive supportive people that encourage, listen and see the good in situations that look grim. People want to be around positive people, and positive thinking people attract positive thinking people.

Changing our thinking is exciting and empowering. Learning how to reframe thoughts allows us to let go of regret and stop carrying the weight of the past. As we learn not to dwell on what is wrong and who to blame, we free ourselves from the trap of victimhood. The more we choose the positive, the more our perspective transforms. The clarity we gain leads to better decisions and outcomes. Small shifts in thinking really can lead to lasting changes.

Happy 250th Birthday, America!
