Understanding and Reversing Alcohol’s Damage

pixelshot/CanvaPro

Recent research published in the journal Addiction revealed that 62 diseases are entirely attributable to alcohol consumption, including mental and behavioral disorders, liver and gastrointestinal diseases, neurological and cardiovascular ailments, maternal and fetal conditions, and intentional and unintentional injuries. The researchers also discovered that alcoholic drinks increase the risk of infectious diseases such as pneumonia and sexually transmitted diseases, injuries from traffic and other accidents, and non-infectious diseases like Type-2 diabetes, pancreatitis and certain cancers.

Although alcohol consumption is strongly associated with numerous health conditions, reducing or abstaining from drinking can successfully reverse many of its negative effects. As people decrease or eliminate alcoholic beverages, they can lower the risk of injuries and improve blood pressure, immune function and brain health within a short time. Early-stage liver changes can often be reversed. While chronic, alcohol-related conditions such as cirrhosis, heart disease and brain damage cannot be reversed, cutting back or cutting out drinking altogether can slow their progression and improve overall health.

The researchers analyzed 56 meta-analysis studies and 21 systemic reviews on alcohol consumption and ischemic heart disease to identify relationships between the volume of alcohol consumption and the risk of health outcomes.
