Finding Strength and Balance with Pravilo at Fight and Heal

For Doug Springer, physical wellness is about more than strength or flexibility. It is about creating balance throughout the body—and discovering the sense of calm and resilience that can come with it.

At Fight and Heal in Washington, New Jersey, Springer is introducing clients to Pravilo, an unusual whole-body stretching and conditioning practice with roots in ancient Russian physical training. Fight and Heal is currently the only certified Pravilo stretching location in the tri-state area.

“Pravilo is more than stretching—it is a journey inward,” says Springer, a martial arts practitioner with more than 20 years of experience. “As the body releases tension and finds balance, the mind becomes still, the breath becomes deeper, and we reconnect with the strength that has always been within us. True balance begins from the inside out.”

An Ancient Approach to Modern-Day Tension

Historically associated with the physical preparation of Russian warriors, Pravilo was developed as a way to stretch, strengthen and condition the body as an integrated system rather than concentrating on individual muscle groups.

The practice looks dramatically different from a conventional stretching session. The participant’s wrists and ankles are secured to a specialized frame using ropes or straps. Carefully controlled tension is then applied to gently lengthen and stretch the body in multiple directions.

This creates a simultaneous full-body stretch that engages muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments and fascia—the network of connective tissue that surrounds and supports structures throughout the body.

Rather than forcing the body into a particular position, the tension is gradually adjusted according to the individual and the purpose of the session. The experience can range from gentle stretching and relaxation to more physically demanding conditioning for athletes and active individuals.

The process can also make physical imbalances easier to recognize.

As the body lifts into the Pravilo frame, differences between the two sides may become more apparent, helping the practitioner identify areas of tightness, restriction or weakness. With continued practice, the goal is to encourage greater symmetry, mobility and body awareness.

From Relaxation to Athletic Performance

Springer sees Pravilo as valuable for a wide range of people, not only martial artists and athletes.

His ideal client, he says, is “anyone and everyone who values their health and longevity, especially those who are looking to optimize their physical health by building a foundation capable of recovering from injury and stress.”

For someone who spends long hours sitting, standing or performing repetitive movements, a session may focus primarily on stretching, decompression and relaxation. For an athlete, sessions can incorporate greater resistance and intensity with the goal of improving mobility, coordination, stability and overall physical performance.

Pravilo also places considerable emphasis on breathing and relaxation. Because the entire body is being stretched simultaneously, participants are encouraged to remain aware of their breath rather than simply pushing through physical resistance.

That mind-body connection is an important part of Springer’s approach.

“Stretch the body. Quiet the mind. Restore the balance within,” he says.

Working With the Body as a Whole

One of the principles behind Pravilo is that muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and joints do not function independently. Movement in one part of the body can influence another, which is why whole-body mobility and alignment are emphasized throughout the practice.

The sustained, controlled stretching used during sessions is intended to encourage greater freedom of movement while reducing the sense of compression and tightness that can accumulate from everyday life, exercise and stress.

Springer believes people sometimes focus so much on building muscular strength that they overlook mobility, connective tissue and the body’s ability to relax and recover.

“When the body is open, the mind becomes clear,” he says, “and when the mind is clear, we discover the balance within.”

That philosophy is reflected in the name Fight and Heal itself: developing strength while also giving the body an opportunity to restore, recover and find equilibrium.

Looking ahead, Springer hopes to expand awareness of both Fight and Heal and Pravilo throughout New Jersey and the tri-state area, introducing more people to a practice that remains unfamiliar to many.

For those accustomed to conventional stretching or exercise, Pravilo offers a distinctly different experience—and an opportunity to explore strength, flexibility and relaxation from a whole-body perspective.
