A stroll down the natural health aisle may reveal bottles of herbal and homeopathic remedies sitting side by side on the shelf. Although they may seem similar, these two therapeutic systems have distinct origins, preparation methods, concentrations, dosage philosophies and ways of working in the body.
Herbal medicine, also known as botanical medicine or phytotherapy, harnesses the power of plant parts like leaves, flowers, roots, bark and seeds to prevent and treat illness. The chemical compounds found in the herbs interact with human physiology and can be studied pharmacologically and clinically to understand their effects on biological processes.
While some homeopathic remedies are derived from plants used in herbal medicine, others come from minerals, chemicals and even animal sources. Homeopathy operates on the principle that “like cures like”. It uses highly diluted natural substances to encourage the body’s own healing mechanisms.
Before embarking on herbal or homeopathic treatments, it is important to consult all members of a patient’s whole health care team to ensure that potential interactions are managed and the best integrative care is supported.
